Exhibition: Holzer`s Inflammatory Essays
Faulconer Gallery intern Nic Wilson '12 uses Jenny Holzer’s "Inflammatory Essays" as the starting point for an exploration of art, context and meaning. Part of Holzer’s multi-part piece will be presented in the Chrystal Center, and other parts will be presented around campus. http://holzr.tumblr.com Nic writes: “Jenny Holzer’s Inflammatory Essays draws its voice from the speeches of (in)famous political figures such as Trotsky, Mao and Lenin amongst others. Rearranging these texts, appropriating their style and power for her own ends, Holzer aims at provocation, at urgency. Wealth is condemned in one breath and lauded in the next; from the print calls the voice of both the executioner and the soul for whom the gallows await. Holzer is not interested in a particular didactic message but says rather, 'I wanted the reader to jump, at least, and maybe consider doing something useful'. Holzer is interested in action, in agency, on the part of the viewer.” Exhibition runs 8 a.m. until 5 p.m., Monday through Friday April 23 until June 8th.
Summer Break Snail Mail Forwarding
| The process for forwarding “Snail Mail” over summer break will be
available on Pioneer Web, beginning April 23, 2012.
If your mail is to be forwarded to your permanent home address (most likely your parent/guardian address) then do nothing. If over summer break you would like your mail sent somewhere other than your permanent home address or you will remain on campus for the summer, you need to fill out the online form. To complete the form, log on to Pioneer Web. Click on snail mail forwarding (left side of web page) and complete the form. Submit. The deadline for submitting the form is May 20th. All First-Class mail will be forwarded to your current permanent home address beginning May 21th. Magazines, newspapers and catalogs are not forwarded and will be recycled or discarded. Please contact publishers and vendors for a temporary or permanent change of address. UPS, Fed Ex & DHL packages will be refused. Contact Mail Services at ext. 3421 if you have any questions. Graduates will have a campus mailbox until the Tuesday following Commencement. Graduates will have a limited time to the snail mail forwarding option (2 -3 weeks) after that time all address updates should be sent by e-mail to grinnell@alumni.edu indicating if it is a temporary or permanent address change. |
Renewing Library Books over Summer Break
Students: Beginning May 12, you may renew your current library book checkouts through the summer break. These items will still be subject to recall, so if you are away from campus, you will be responsible for returning them by the due date to avoid overdue fines and replacement charges. If an item you have checked out is recalled, you may mail it back to us. Please note that all Media Room items will still check out for only one week - they will not check out over the entire summer break.
It is Time to Return Rental Textbooks
Return your rented textbooks to the College Bookstore before May 23, 2012 to avoid being charged the replacement fee. You will be sent several reminders at your grinnell.edu account. The reminders will list the books you have rented and not returned.
Graduates, Caps and Gowns are Here
The College Bookstore has what you need for commencement day. You can buy a cap, gown and tassel for $30.00 starting now until the morning of the ceremony (but don't wait that long!) We also sell the tassels and caps separately. No pre-ordering is necessary. The bookstore carrys an assortment of sizes based on your height. ****This year you will be wearing black gowns that are "green". They are made from recycled beverage bottles. If you return the gown to the bookstore, we will send it in to be made into laundry bags for homeless shelters or other cool purposes.
Commencement Pet Policy
For safety purposes, please do not bring animals to Commencement activities. Bringing pets can be harmful for animals, as well as for people who encounter them. Service animals are welcome at all events.
ITS Year-end Announcement
All Students: Register for the Web-Based Password Management Program: If you haven’t already done so, register for Grinnell College’s web-based password management program to be able to manage your own personal account whether on campus or away at any time of the day or night. Go to the link https://passwordreset.grinnell.edu to register. Be aware that passwords expire every 190 days. Reminder for Student Organizations: Each spring, student organizations that have a NT Storage or email account must register at Information Technology Services prior to the deadline. This spring, Monday, May 21st, 2012 is the deadline date. The existing computer accounts of student organizations that have not received ITS authorizations by the deadline will be disabled and removed along with graduated senior accounts. The SGA Service office is also requiring newly responsible parties for student organizations to register with them. All May, 2012 Graduating Seniors and Ninth Semester Teaching Program Participants: Please go to the link http://www.grinnell.edu/its/policy/gradsenior/ to read the policy dated 11/01/04 regarding extension of your Grinnell College NT/email accounts following Commencement on May 21st, 2012. Accounts belonging to May graduates will be granted an automatic six month extension of their active directory account. The accounts will be deactivated on December 1 of the same year as graduation. Graduating seniors enrolled in the ninth semester teaching programs will be granted an automatic six month extension upon completion of their ninth semester of study. Graduating seniors and ninth semester students who don’t wish to have their accounts extended may request immediate account termination using the ITS form “Graduating Senior Request for Immediate Removal of Computer Account Upon Graduation,” available on the ITS web site. Email List Reminder: Before you leave for summer vacation or as a graduate, please unsubscribe yourself from all mailing lists! If you do not know how to do this, contact the computing helpdesk, x4400, in the Forum, the ARH General Computing Lab (GenComp at x4826), or call ITS at x4901 for assistance.

1966 Yearbook Project
April 13 to June 3, 2012; Faulconer Gallery In 1966, Henry Wilhelm '68, with photography and writing assistance from John Phillips '67, John Wolf '66, and Robert Hodierne '68, created a yearbook that captured the place and people of Grinnell. More a series of photo essays than a traditional yearbook, the project has an aesthetic that is captivating even today. The College administration, however, found the content a little too real, asked to have sections removed, and when they couldn't come to an agreement with the editors, refused to allow its publication. It was eventually published in 1986. This exhibition of selected images is the result of Wilhelm's complete digital remastering of the images for online access. Faulconer Gallery: noon-5 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday; noon-8 p.m. Thursday and Friday.
Annual Student Art Salon
May 4 to June 3, 2012; Faulconer Gallery An exhibition of art created by Grinnell College students over the preceding year. Any student may enter up to three works in any media, and a juror chosen by students then selects the art for the exhibition and the prizewinning pieces. Faulconer Gallery: noon-5 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday; noon-8 p.m. Thursday and Friday.
There's Something Happening Here
| March 11 to June 3, 2012; Burling Gallery
Curated by members of the classes of 1971-1973 By the early 70s, the cultural changes and protests of the late 60s had engulfed Grinnell College, for better or worse. As part of their 30th Reunion activities, the cluster of classes from 1971-73 have curated an exhibition from their Grinnell memorabilia, creating a snapshot of the life and issues on campus in turbulent times. Burling Gallery: 8 a.m. - 10 p.m. Monday-Friday; 10 a.m. - 10 p.m. Saturday and Sunday |
